FASCISM
in mid-20th
century Italy
To
early fascists World War I's changes in the nature of of war,
society, the state, and technology required the creation a powerful
state capable of mobilizing its citizens, with unprecedented
authority, to serve on the front lines and to provide economic
production. Fascists believed liberal democracy was obsolete. A
totalitarian single-party state, led by a dictator and a martial
government composed of the members of the governing fascist party was
necessary to forge national unity and maintain a stable and orderly
society.
