After more than a century as one of the nation’s largest logging companies,
the Pacific Lumber Company in Scotia, northern California USA, was taken over by
Maxxam, Inc. corporation of Texas, in 1985. The end of the
sustainable growth policy under the previous owners (the Murphy family)
outraged environmental activists especially as old growth lumber was harvested
for profit.
