New Zealand in the 20th century
Beneath the Waves history/music
series host Gerry Takano
New Zealand was the first country
to give women the vote (1893) and to offer State pensions and state housing for
workers. Declining to join the
Australian Federation in 1901, New Zealand became an independent 'dominion' in
1907. As part of the British Commonwealth, thousands of New Zealanders served
and died overseas in the First World; the battle of Gallipoli in Turkey is
regarded as a coming of age for the country.
