The Arts and Crafts Movement, an international desire for traditional decorative craftsmanship using simple forms, emerged between 1880 and the 1920s.  Fueled by anti-industrial and pre-capitalist sentiments, the Movement advocated economic and social reform until it was displaced by Modernism in the 1930s..

Far-right political Nazi fanaticism surfaced during the social and financial upheavals after World War I.  Nazism pushed forward rampant antisemitism, racial hygiene, eugenics, pan-Germanism and the plight of the mentally and physically disabled, Romani people, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others.  The Nazi regime was also against cultural modernism and supported the development of an extensive military at the expense of intellectualism. 

The Battle of Berlin ended years of fascist Nazi terrorism.

The post WW2 Cold War/ Nuclear Age was full of anxiety, fear and intrigue.  The sightings and stories of unidentified flying objects, alien visits and other phenomenon became fixed into American culture.  Project Blue Book was a 1952 -1970 US Air Force study of unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

History and Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City

American journalist and author Erik Larson’s novel, "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America" is set in Chicago, circa 1893.  His novel intertwines the true tales of architect for the 1893 World's Fair,  Daniel H. Burnham, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, a serial killer, who lured his victims to their deaths in his "Murder Castle” located near the Fair.
