Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol




Charles Dickens was not the first celebrate the Christmas season in literature but his popular book, A Christmas Carol, was an early account of a humanitarian vision of the holiday for the public.  Dickens believed the best way to reach the broadest segment of the population regarding his concerns about poverty and social injustice was through the Christmas story.

San Quentin Prison, San Francisco Bay Area

San Quentin State Prison (SQ), located north of San Francisco in Marin County, opened in July 1852. It is the oldest prison in California and has the largest death row for male inmates in the United States. The prison, featured on film, video, and television, has also been the subject of many books.
