Plans for a New Silk Road for the 21st Century are being promoted by China as an economic belt along the route of the Silk Road traveled more than 2,000 years ago. The proposal, supported by the international think tank, the Schiller Institute, is intended to boost trade and cooperation across the two continents.

After more than a century as one of the nation’s largest logging companies, the Pacific Lumber Company in Scotia, northern California USA, was taken over by Maxxam, Inc. corporation of Texas, in 1985. The end of the sustainable growth policy under the previous owners (the Murphy family) outraged environmental activists especially as old growth lumber was harvested for profit.
