New Zealand in the 20th century

New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote (1893) and to offer State pensions and state housing for workers.  Declining to join the Australian Federation in 1901, New Zealand became an independent 'dominion' in 1907. As part of the British Commonwealth, thousands of New Zealanders served and died overseas in the First World; the battle of Gallipoli in Turkey is regarded as a coming of age for the country.

1960s Brutalism

Brutalism, an architectural movement of mid-20th century Modernism, used ‘raw concrete’ as the primarily material of choice.  The Brutalist aesthetic is praised by some but criticized by others as intimidating, unwelcoming, cold and isolated from traces of the outside non-urban world.

Charles Lindbergh and the kidnapping case

American pilot Charles Lindbergh, famous for his 1927 record-breaking flight from New York City to Paris, was a Nazi sympathizer who believed in eugenics and racial superiority.  The kidnapping of Lindbergh’s son, together with inefficient evidence, created suspicion that he masterminded of a conspiracy in the kidnap and murder of his little boy.

Privatization in the 20th century

The transfer of  a nonprofit organizationor a profit business, enterprise, agency, public service, or public property from the public sector(a government) to the private sector has consequences on many levels.  Privatization also means government outsourcing of services or functions to private firms for services such as revenue collection, education, law enforcement, and prison management.

The Controversy of the Sacco and Venzetti trial

During the early 1900s turmoil between labor and capital the guilty verdict of the infamous Boston Sacco and Venzetti murder case triggered riots and cries of innocence.  The climate of opinion, influenced by their foreignness as Italian immigrants and their anarchist political beliefs, was said to condemn them without a fair trial.  The actual truth of their role in the murders, however, may never be known.

Walt Disney his theme park vision

Walt Disney, a commercial illustrator at the age of 18, moved to Hollywood, California in the early 1920s and set up the Disney Brothers Studio.  The character of Mickey Mouse was created in 1928. Disney later introduced synchronized sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor, feature-length cartoons and technical developments in cameras.
